Mission of the Tax Claim Bureau

Collection of delinquent school, municipal and county real estate property taxes. Prepare and conduct County Tax Sales.

Responsibilities of the Tax Claim Bureau

To maintain public record of all real estate which possess unpaid taxes and to issue tax lien information needed when real estate is transferred.

  • My husband was recently laid off from his job and we were unable to pay last year's property taxes. The local tax collector has turned them over to the Tax Claim Bureau and we are concerned about a tax sale. How should we proceed?
    • The Tax Claim Bureau offers installment payment programs that stops any tax sale for a small down payment and an agreement to pay the taxes in installments to fit most situations.
  • There is a vacant lot behind our home. Some neighbors have said it was up for tax sale a few years back and no one bought it. How could we find out more on the status of this property?
    • The Tax Claim Bureau has listings of many properties that have gone through tax sale with no bid. Call or stop in and review our lists of properties throughout the County and make a bid offer for as little as $50.00. The property behind your home is probably listed here.
  • A cousin of my wife wants to give us a small lot he no longer wants. How could we find out of he owes any back taxes on this parcel?
    • Call the Tax Claim Bureau. Tax information is public record, therefore, we can tell you the amount, if any, of the delinquent taxes on this property?
  • Can I pay my tax payment with a check?
    • Yes. The Tax Claim Bureau now accepts personal checks, as well as, money orders, and cashiers checks. Cash payments are limited to $100.00.
  • When are the tax sales?
    • The annual Upset Tax Sale is always held the second Monday in September. Other sales are scheduled throughout the year. Call to find out when the next sale is slated. All sales are open to the public and are auction style.
